Case Study: Tracing a Missing Marine Biologist in Comoros, East Africa

Client Background A UK-based Marine Research Institute contacted Bond Rees for assistance in locating a marine biologist who had gone missing while conducting fieldwork in the Comoros, a small island nation in the Indian Ocean. The biologist had been studying coral reefs and marine ecosystems but had suddenly ceased all communication with the Institute. Concerned about their safety, especially given the challenging environment and remote locations involved, the Institute required urgent assistance in finding the missing scientist.

The Investigation Bond Rees commenced the investigation by gathering all available information, including the biologist’s research itinerary, last known location, and recent activities. The marine biologist had been based on the island of Grande Comore but had planned to visit several smaller islands to conduct field studies. No further communication had been received after this leg of their journey began.

Digital Footprint and Local Contacts Our digital forensics team conducted a comprehensive analysis of the biologist’s digital footprint, including their phone records, email communications, and social media presence. The last known location of their mobile phone was near a coastal village on the island of Mohéli, a more remote part of the Comoros archipelago. Further investigation revealed that the biologist had been planning to dive in an isolated area to assess the impact of climate change on local coral reefs.

Bond Rees reached out to local contacts, including boat operators, local guides, and officials from marine conservation organisations, to gather more information. Several contacts reported that the biologist had chartered a boat to access a remote reef but had not returned at the expected time.

On-the-Ground Investigation in the Comoros With this lead, Bond Rees deployed local investigators to Mohéli to conduct on-the-ground inquiries. Our team visited coastal communities, spoke with local fishermen, and reached out to boat operators who might have seen or assisted the biologist. After several days of investigation, we discovered that the boat the biologist had used had experienced engine trouble at sea. As a result, the biologist and the boat crew had been stranded on a small uninhabited islet. Due to their remote location and limited communication equipment, they had been unable to call for help.

Outcome Bond Rees quickly confirmed the biologist’s location and well-being and provided this information to the UK-based Research Institute. The Institute coordinated with local authorities to arrange a rescue mission. The biologist and crew were safely returned to Grande Comore, and the biologist was able to resume their research work.

Why Bond Rees? This case highlighted Bond Rees’s ability to trace missing persons in remote and difficult-to-reach environments such as the Comoros. Our combination of digital forensics, local intelligence gathering, and effective field investigations ensured a swift and safe recovery of the missing marine biologist. Bond Rees remains committed to supporting research organisations by ensuring the safety and security of their personnel, no matter how challenging the circumstances.
