Case Study: Bug Sweep Investigation in Chester

The Challenge

When a Chester customer contacted Bond Rees, she found herself in a troubled situation that many people sadly experience after a relationship breakdown. Her former partner seemed to know everything about her private conversations and activities, which she was sure she never shared with him. This odd phenomena raised suspicions of electronic bugs in her home and vehicle.

Bond Rees are aware of both the seriousness and severity of privacy violations, often leaving victims feeling unsafe in their own homes and various places they regularly visit. As a result of this Bond Rees sent our expert Technical Surveillance Counter Measures (TSCM) team to carry out a full electronic bug sweep of both the home and BMW X3 of the client.

Our Professional Approach

Bond Rees carried out this sensitive investigation with the professionalism and discretion our clients expect. Our certified TSCM experts arrived with the best detection equipment on the market, including the REI ANDRE professional counter-surveillance receiver, FLIR thermal imaging camera and Audiotel Super Broom spectrum analyser. By multi-layered detection procedure, it is possible to detect complex radiating emitting devices.

The investigation started with a room-by-room investigation which focused firstly on each premises being a potential viewing point while observing the client’s belongings and lifestyle.

Comprehensive Property Investigation

Living Room Analysis

Our team conducted a meticulous examination of the main living area, recognising that this space often contains the highest concentration of electronic equipment — making it an ideal location for concealing surveillance devices.

Every electrical fitting, power outlet, light fixture, and piece of furniture underwent rigorous inspection. Particular attention was devoted to areas behind the television and audio-visual equipment, as these locations provide both power sources and camouflage for covert devices. Using thermal imaging, we verified that no abnormal power signatures were present that might indicate hidden electronics.

Kitchen and Dining Area Sweep

The kitchen and dining area of the house was cluttered with electric gadgets and had too many loopholes making it a challenging place to clean. Our experts thoroughly checked all cabinets, appliances, power sources and light fixtures. Thermal imaging could not see any threatening heat signatures and RF spectrum analysis did not see any secret transmissions from this area.

Bedroom Investigations

Both the master bedroom and the children’s bedroom were given an in-depth investigation as they are spaces where there is often surveillance taking place. We respected all furniture, electrical outlets, personal storage areas, and in the children’s room, toys and electronic devices. All readings were normal, indicating that everything in these private spaces was safe.

Garage and Outbuilding Assessment

The garage which was converted into a home gym and workshop required special attention since there were storage areas and other works. All electrical sources, tools and exercise equipment were inspected. Throughout the inspection the RF environment did not change and the thermal imaging did not show any abnormal heat sources between 2-14 GHz.

Vehicle Counter-Surveillance

Modern vehicles are an excellent way to hide devices and a vehicle sweep by professionals is essential for safety. Our electronic bug expert undertook a thorough sweep of the client’s BMW X3, intimately searching every possible location where a bug could be hidden.

The inspection of the cabin included all seating areas, roof lining, components on the dashboard, and door panels, including the under-seat wiring and air conditioning system. The spare wheel compartment and the side panels were also checked for alterations or unauthorised fitting.

Our experts took off the available covers to check wiring harness visually and check out the fuses for any evidence of having been tampered with. The inspection process of the engine bay covers all areas around the battery, fuse blocks, and air intake systems. Underside inspection uses a device fit a magnetic or mechanically fixed device along the chassis rails, suspension mounts, and fuel tank area.

Following our comprehensive investigation, we were pleased to provide our client with definitive results: no surveillance or covert electronic devices were detected anywhere within her home or vehicle.
