Case Study: Tracing a Missing Environmental Engineer in Saarbrücken, Germany

Client Background

A UK-based environmental consultancy firm contacted Bond Rees to trace a missing environmental engineer who had been sent to Saarbrücken, Germany, to oversee a large-scale environmental impact assessment for a new industrial park.

Saarbrücken, located near the French border in the Saar region, is an industrial hub undergoing significant development, with a focus on sustainable industry and environmental conservation. The engineer was responsible for assessing the potential environmental risks associated with the project.

When the engineer failed to report back after a site visit and missed key project meetings, the firm became concerned about their safety and the project’s timeline.

The Investigation

Gathering Information

Bond Rees gathered all relevant details regarding the engineer’s recent activities, communications, and accommodation. The engineer had been staying near Saarbrücken Castle, close to the Saar River and the city’s administrative and industrial districts.

The last known communication from the engineer was an email confirming attendance at a site inspection in the Burbach district, an industrial area known for ongoing developments and factories.

Digital Footprint and Local Contacts

Our digital forensics team analysed the engineer’s phone records, GPS data, and recent financial transactions. The last known GPS signal placed the engineer near the site in Burbach, but no further communication was recorded afterward.

Bond Rees reached out to local environmental consultants, hotel staff, and project managers involved in the industrial park development to gather more information. Witnesses confirmed that the engineer had attended the site inspection but had not returned to the hotel or attended any scheduled follow-up meetings.

On-Ground Investigation in Saarbrücken

Bond Rees deployed local investigators to Saarbrücken, focusing on the Burbach district, surrounding industrial zones, and key transportation routes. Investigators also reviewed CCTV footage from the site and surrounding areas to trace the engineer’s movements.

After following several leads, our team discovered that the engineer had gone to a remote area near the Saar River to conduct water quality tests as part of the environmental assessment. Further investigation revealed that the engineer had suffered a medical emergency while performing the tests and had collapsed due to heat exhaustion and dehydration.

The remote location made it difficult for the engineer to seek help, but local workers eventually found them and provided assistance. However, due to the location and damage to communication devices, there had been a delay in notifying the firm.

Outcome

Bond Rees quickly located the engineer and confirmed their condition, providing this critical information to the environmental consultancy firm in London. After receiving medical attention and rest, the engineer was able to recover and return to work on the environmental impact assessment, ensuring that the project continued without major delays.
