Client background
A UK based charity organisation contacted Bond Rees to locate a volunteer who had gone missing while working on a community development project in Bolivia. The volunteer had last been in touch several weeks ago, and since then all communication had ceased. The charity was deeply concerned for the volunteers safety and needed to locate them urgently.
The investigation
Bond Rees began by gathering all available information, including the volunteers, last known location contacts within the project and any recent communication records. The charity provided the volunteers, emergency contacts and a rough timeline of their activities in Bolivia before they went missing.
Digital tracing and local contacts
Our digital forensics team immediately started analysing the volunteers online presence. Although there had been no recent social media activity, we found that the volunteers phone had last been active near Cochabamba, a city in central Bolivia, which was in line with the project area. Bond Rees also reached out to local contacts, including the organisation’s partners in Bolivia, to inquire about any recent sightings or information. These efforts confirmed that the volunteer had been seen at a bus station in Cochabamba a few days after their last communication, possibly heading to a rural area to visit a remote community.
Field Investigation in Bolivia
Based on these findings, Bond Rees deployed a local investigative team to Cochabamba. Our team conducted a series of inquiries at transportation hubs, local guesthouses and with community leaders in the surrounding areas. After several days of intensive searching, we learned that the volunteer had been staying with a local family in a small village outside the city, working on a new project. Further investigation revealed that the volunteer had chosen to stay in the village longer than planned due to an unexpected opportunity to support a new initiative. The volunteers decision to remain in a remote location had limited their access to reliable communication channels.
Outcome
Bond Rees successfully confirmed the volunteers location and provided this information to the UK charity. The charity was relieved to learn that the volunteer was safe and was able to reestablish contact with them. Arrangements were made for the volunteer to check in regularly and maintain communication with both the local team and the UK headquarters.
