Client Case Study: Performing a Bug Sweep for a Business Office in Brentwood, Essex

A business owner from Brentwood came to Bond Rees in November 2024 after experiencing multiple data leaks of sensitive information over the past year. Employees urged our client to seek professional assistance in securing their personal information stored in the company’s databases and expressed concerns for their safety. 

The client took his employees’ concerns very seriously and turned to Bond Rees for help in uncovering the truth, preventing future data leaks and restoring employee confidence in workplace security. 

What we did:

We deployed private investigators in the Brentwood area to meet with our client at their office to discuss the investigation plan in taking into account the office layout and where bug sweeping services were to be carried out. 

The investigation began by our team performing an extensive bug sweep covering all areas of the workplace including the main office, staff rooms, bathrooms and ventilation systems. We also examined common hiding places such as clocks, smoke alarms, and office computers to ensure maximum security and RF detection equipment was implemented to identify whether any GPS signals were transmitting a live feed of information to another party. 

Investigators concluded the investigation by conducting the useful ‘flashlight method’ which involves darkening the premises, by switching off any lights and closing blinds and flashing a light around the room to check for any reflections that may signal a hidden camera lens.

We also ended up running a bug sweep on the client’s home in Epping, his daughter’s flat in Barking, and his vehicle.

The Results:

From the bug sweep, it was evident there had been a total of six surveillance devices hidden around the workspace. Of these six devices,  two were cameras and four were listening devices. However, only two of the devices were actively working at the time of discovery as the rest had run out of battery so they were no longer operational. 

Our detectives retrieved all of the devices to perform a further analysis, finding that the operational devices were transmitting information to a receiver located between Rayleigh and Southend-on-Sea. With our findings we compiled a detailed report for our client and provided recommendations for how to secure their databases and deal with the problem.
