In January 2025, Bond Rees was approached by a supermarket manager based in Rowley’s Green, who was experiencing cash discrepancies and missing stock. The inconsistencies began shortly after hiring a new employee in October 2024, but there was no evidence of staff theft so the manager was hesitant to confront the employee empty-handed.

Despite having CCTV systems in place, our client was left confused by the irregularities in cash and stock accounting, so he came to Bond Rees for help in uncovering the truth. 

What we did: 

We met with our client in Edgwick to gather information on the cash discrepancies including accounting paperwork and existing CCTV footage, to assist our financial analysts investigate the inconsistencies. Undercover detectives were sent to the supermarket in Rowley’s Green to carry out an assessment of the premises to find potential blindspots that left opportunities for undetected theft. 

After the consultation, a covert surveillance plan was implemented: hidden cameras were positioned in previously unmonitored areas including: the stockroom and storage areas, corner sections of the retail floor, behind large shelving units and additional angles of the staff room.

The new CCTV surveillance setup allowed a more extensive coverage of the supermarket and eliminated any blind spots.The installation was carried out in the early morning before staff were scheduled to work to avoid disruption and to keep the investigation discreet.

The Result:

Once the two-week investigation period had ended, we met up with our client to review the footage which revealed definitive evidence of staff theft from our client’s suspected employee. The footage captured the new employee stealing boxes of valuable electronic goods from the stockroom and concealing them in the staff room before removing them from the premises. 

A thorough background check revealed that this was not the first instance of theft the employee had committed as our findings showed the employee had been terminated from their previous employment role at a shop in Binley for the same incident. 

A comprehensive report was completed for our client with all of our findings and the client expressed his relief at identifying the culprit and preventing further losses for his supermarket. Armed with this information, the store manager made the decision to terminate the employee’s contract and for the future to hire carefully to avoid this happening again.

Results:

After reviewing all of the footage and audio recordings with our client, there was clear evidence of malicious workplace gossip, exclusion and verbal harassment. Most significantly, our cameras spotted a former colleague tampering with our client’s paperwork and stealing personal belongings.

HR then proceeded to make an informed decision to issue formal warnings to several employees involved in the harassment and an immediate termination of the employee caught tampering with the client’s work documents and stealing her personal belongings.
