How polygraph tests work

The human body responds to situations of stress or threat (such as the fear that one’s own deception will be detected and the consequences of this) by making certain changes to bodily rates such as the respiration rate, pulse rate, blood pressure, skin temperature, and perspiration rate.

A lie detector test works by using sensors to record these changes whilst a series of questions are posed to the subject.

The polygraph examiner is trained in the responses that indicate deception and those which indicate honesty and how to measure and score the readings that the sensors achieve through data accumulated from the subject.

Following the test, the examiner analyses the data in a graph format and can, from this, ascertain if there was evidence of deception obtained from the examinee during questioning.

An experienced and knowledgeable examiner will also observe body language and demeanour of the subject throughout testing to identify any other clues of deception and will listen carefully to their narrative and view of events leading to the need for testing to check for any incongruence or conflict in their story, as well as gaining the views of anyone else significant to the event.

What to expect at a lie detector test?

The examiner will call you prior to your test to obtain details of the issue that needs to be addressed and check if you have any mental or physical health difficulties, take any prescribed medications, or use alcohol on a regular basis or any illicit substances, and its important to be open and honest about this and any information you share will be wholly confidential.

The examiner can attend your home for testing, and this provides a relaxed environment for you which is helpful to the testing process, but we can arrange a discreet and local venue if you cannot accommodate testing.

On the test day it is important that you don’t use any illegal drugs or alcohol and try to minimise caffeine use such as through coffee or energy drink consumption.

The examiner will conduct a pre-test interview with you to gain your consent for the test, go through the questions that will be used with you, and gather any further background information and details required.

The sensors will be applied over light clothing to your torso, arm, and hand and there will be a short acquaintance test to ensure that the equipment is calibrated to your individual responses and then your test will begin and will consist of several sets of questions, some of which will be targeting the issue your test has been arranged to address and some which will feel irrelevant.

After your test it is sometimes possible to provide verbal results straight away, but it is more often the case that your data will need careful analysis to guarantee an accurate and correct result is provided as this is quite a lengthy process.

You will always receive your results and a full written report within 48 hours of your test which will be emailed to you, and it is necessary for you to have an active email account to receive this as it is not possible to post this to you.

Can you do a lie detector test online?

The simple answer is no! There is no evidence to support online lie detector testing and this is not a valid or accurate means of conducting lie detector testing.

The examiner being present in person is the only way to achieve evidence based and verified lie detector testing and so this is the only format that Bond Rees offer.

Are lie detector tests accurate?

The American Polygraph Association is the world expert on polygraph examination and advises that lie detector testing achieves between 85% and 95% accuracy.

Polygraph examination is used worldwide to assist criminal investigation, legal procedures, insurance claim verification, employment processes, probation and offender release and many other areas and is a highly respected and regarded means of discerning truth from lies.
