Southampton Lie Detector Test

A lie detector test, or polygraph examination as it is otherwise known, is a sophisticated and developed method of ascertaining the truth and evidencing deception.

Every polygraph examination is written and formulated for a specific and bespoke issue and can be constructed to apply to any topic or situation making it the appropriate solution in any circumstances where the truth needs clarifying and the facts uncovered.

A lie detector test can help private individuals who want to find out if a partner is cheating on them, pinpoint the culprit of a harmful act or behaviour such as theft or betrayal, uncover the facts behind family or friendship secrets and lies, or demonstrate their own innocence in response to incorrect or inaccurate allegations and accusations.

Lie detector testing also applies to the area of business and employment and is widely utilised in corporate situations worldwide especially in the United States where a polygraph examination is a commonplace part of job application procedures and also used within employee monitoring and employee investigation activities and oversight.

Use of polygraph examination can protect your company from further damage in instances where theft of fraud has occurred within the workplace and the perpetrator needs to be found out or the actions confirmed such as in situations of false claims for sick pay or expenses for example.

How polygraph tests work

Polygraph examination involves asking the examinee a number of carefully formulated, ordered, and worded questions that have been constructed according to principles and methodology based on many years of experimentation and research whilst the examines is connected to a number of sensors that have been placed on various areas of their body.

These sensors record bodily changes that scientific research and learning has found to present in an individual when they are exposed to perceived stress or threat such as the fear of their dishonesty being found out.

These bodily changes include variations in heart rate, blood pressure, respiration rate, skin temperature, and perspiration to the hand and occur on an involuntary and subconscious basis initiated by the central nervous system and are not within the overt control of the individual.

The physiological reactions are recorded by the sensors and a polygraph software programme receives the data and coverts it into visual and numerical data which facilitates scoring by the examiner which, in turn, provides the result of whether or not deception was detected when the examines gave their response to the question concerned.

What to expect at a lie detector test?

Generally, lie detector testing in conducted at the home of the examinee to reduce stress and enable a familiar location and will need you to provide a firm chair and surface such as a dining table. If you cannot provide a premises for the test, however, Bond Rees will arrange a private and discreet local venue for you.

The polygraph examiner will call you or the person requesting the test (if this is a third party and you are not requesting the test for yourself although you must always consent to a test that you sit) prior to your test day to find out about the issue behind your test request and some basic information about the circumstances and what is involved.

You need to tell the examiner about ant physical or mental health difficulties, any prescribed medications that you use, and any alcohol or illicit substances used by you. It’s really important that you do not have any alcohol or illicit drug use on the day of your test and for as long before your test day as you can and try to avoid caffeine on test day.

Initially when the examiner arrives, they will carry out a pre-test interview with you that will discuss the issue you need to address in detail, ensure your willing consent to take part in the test, get to know you a little, and explain the questions that will be asked during your polygraph test and check that you understand these and that they are appropriate and relevant.

No person can be present during the pre-test interview or the test itself apart from the examiner and the examinee and absolutely no recording can be undertaken as this can all influence the accuracy and validity of your test results.

The sensors will be attached to your torso, arm, and hand over light clothing (large items like jackets and jumpers will need to be removed) and the test will commence which will involve 3 sets of questions that are specific to the matter to be addressed, relevant in some way to the matter, and irrelevant to return you to a physiological baseline between pertinent questions.

Following the test it might be possible to issue your results immediately, but the examiner may need more time to analyse your data before they can advise of the outcome due to the differences in subtlety within individuals and their stress response.

Bond Rees will ensure that you always receive your test results within 48 hours of testing and a full written report via email will also be provided within 48 hours of testing.

Can you do a lie detector test online?

Accurate lie detector testing needs the examiner to be present in person with the examinee during a lie detector test and no evidence has been provided to support remote or online lie detector testing and there is absolutely no verification that test results achieved in this manner are accurate or even have any meaning at all.

Bond Rees only provide in person lie detector testing as this is the only researched, tested, and evidenced method and as an ethical provider it is the only model that we trust and recommend.

Are lie detector tests accurate?

Lie detector testing has been developed worldwide over many decades and is now a highly regarded and scientifically evidenced tool used within law enforcement, insurance claims, criminal investigation, legal cases, courts, probation services, and prison services across the globe.

The American Polygraph Association is the international expert on polygraph examination and estimates accuracy to be between 85% and 95% or even higher in some cases.

Polygraph Test FAQs

Can I take a lie detector test if I am pregnant?

You can sit a lie detector test when you are pregnant and achieve accurate results, but you need to tell your examiner about the pregnancy so that she can accommodate any differences in bodily responses but also ensure that you are suitably cared for during the test.

Whilst lie detector testing does not pose physical risk or harm and is perfectly safe to undertake when pregnant in this sense, do consider if the test will place you under any extreme or unnecessary stress and make sure that you feel comfortable that this will not cause you any emotional harm whilst you are pregnant.

Can someone trick a lie detector test?

There are lots of tips for tricking lie detector testing but the technique is a little more complex than most people seem to think!

Lie detector testing measures physical responses and changes within your body that occur due to established neuronal pathways and are not open to conscious awareness or control so tricking a lie detector test is extremely difficult if not impossible!

How long will a lie detector test take?

There is no set time, and some take longer than others but its best to allow up to 2 hours for your test.

How much does a lie detector test with Bond Rees cost?

You can get a fast and exact no obligation quotation for your lie detector test by contacting Bond Rees on any of the options above – we provide a discount if you need 2 or more tests to be undertaken at the same time and location.
