Neuroscience, psychophysiology, psychology, and the behavioural sciences have determined certain physiological changes that occur within the human body when it is exposed to threat or stress such as the fear of deception being detected.
Such changes have been evidenced to occur within pulse rate, blood pressure, respiration rate, skin temperature, and perspiration rates.
Polygraph testing records the physiological responses exhibited by a person during questioning through the use of sensors attached to their body.
The data recorded is then converted into visual format by software and this enables the polygraph examiner to measure and apply scoring techniques which determine whether the bodily responses of the individual concerned indicate deception or honesty when answering questions about the issue at the heart of the test request.
Lie detector testing involves sensors being attached to your body over light clothing and several sets of questioning being directed at you that you can answer with only yes or no responses.
The physiological changes that your body exhibits during the questioning will be recorded by the sensors and converted into measurable data that the examiner will then analyse.
It is important that you make the examiner aware of any medical conditions you have such as physical or mental health problems and of any medication you are currently taking.
You also need to tell the examiner about any illicit substances you use and any regular alcohol use; this will remain entirely confidential but is important information to achieve accurate results.
It is advised that you do not use any alcohol or illicit substances on the day of your test and that you try to limit caffeine intake.
The examiner will explain the whole testing process to you and help to put you at ease and will answer any questions or concerns you have, and it is entirely normal to feel some nervousness, and this will not impact on your results.
Only the examiner and the examinee can be present during testing and no recording devices can be used as this can impact on the reliability and accuracy of the results achieved.
The Utah model utilised by Bond Rees for lie detector testing can only accommodate one issue per test so you need to be aware that if you have several issues you want to find out the truth about (eg infidelity and theft) you will require more than one test and discounts are available in these situations.
Once you have completed your test you may be able to be verbally advised of your results immediately or the examiner may need to undertake more detailed analysis of your data.
You will always receive your test results and a full written report via email within 48 hours of sitting your test.
In person lie detector testing is the only method that has been studied and tested to ensure accuracy and validity, so this is the only method that Bond Rees offer.
There is currently no evidence or findings to support the use or accuracy of online or remote lie detector testing and this method does not allow any of the essential procedures to be adhered to during testing that achieve accuracy so caution is advised if any provider offers this service to you.
The American Polygraph Association is the leading body for lie detector testing recognised worldwide and advises polygraph examination to achieve accuracy between 85% and 95%.
Bond Rees use the Utah method for test formulation and scoring which studies have found to achieve 90% accuracy.
Bond Rees polygraph examination is provided by a fully trained, experienced, and qualified polygraph examiner who has undergone training with the European Polygraph Academy and is a member of the European Polygraph Association, and who also possesses a BSc (Hons) Psychology Degree and Post Graduate Diploma.
How soon can I book a lie detector test with Bond Rees?
We are usually able to accommodate testing within 48 hours of your request or even sooner in some circumstances; contact us now to find out our availability in your area.
Can my partner attend my test?
It is not possible for any other person to be present during testing as this can place pressure and influence on you and affect the accuracy of results.
The examiner will meet briefly with any partner or other significant person at the test location prior to testing if this is required and answer any questions they may have.
How long does a lie detector test take?
Lie detector testing is a complex and involved process; its best to allow up to 2 hours for your test as it is important not to feel rushed or constrained by time when undergoing testing.
Can I take a lie detector test if I have a mental illness?
This depends on the exact nature and severity of your mental illness; some mental health difficulties do not prevent lie detector testing or the achieving of accurate results, but some will impact and prevent effective polygraph examination.
It’s really important that ethics and wellbeing are considered before you make the decision to take part in a lie detector test or to ask someone else to; contact us and have a chat with our professional examiner about your individual situation and we will be happy to provide guidance around this.
