Our digital forensics team conducted a thorough analysis of the worker’s digital footprint, including satellite phone records, GPS data, recent emails, and social media activity. The last known signal from the satellite phone showed a location near a checkpoint outside Maiduguri, but all communication ceased afterwards. This raised concerns about a possible detainment, abduction, or an accident in an area known for insurgent activity and poor road conditions.
Bond Rees reached out to local contacts, including other NGOs, local community leaders, and security forces, to gather more information. Several contacts reported that the convoy carrying the worker had passed through a known checkpoint but had not reached the intended villages, and no further information was available on their whereabouts.
On-the-Ground Investigation in Nigeria

Our team worked closely with local contacts, including humanitarian workers, community leaders, and international agencies, to gather intelligence on the convoy’s movements and potential whereabouts.
After several days of investigation, we discovered that the convoy had been stopped by an armed group near a contested area along the route. Further inquiries revealed that the worker and their team had been detained by the armed group under suspicion of collaborating with international organisations. The group had taken them to a remote location for questioning, and due to the ongoing conflict, there had been no communication with their organisation or other humanitarian partners.
Outcome
Bond Rees quickly confirmed the worker’s detention and provided this critical information to the humanitarian organisation in the UK. The organisation, with support from international human rights bodies, diplomatic channels, and local intermediaries, initiated negotiations for the worker’s release.
After several days of careful negotiations and pressure from international stakeholders, the worker and their team were released and safely transported back to Maiduguri, eventually returning to the UK.
